An ode to Crete and the possibility to work remotely

Oct 13, 2022 | #insideneylux, neylux

Grigorios is IT Consultant at neylux and oftentimes works remotely from Greece throughout the year. He gives an interesting insight into his life and way of working:

How come you so often work from Greece?
I come from Crete, Greece and being able to combine the beautiful summer, Greek weather with working for neylux is an amazing opportunity.
I’ve been living in Germany for the past 6 years, so visiting my island and meeting my family and friends once in a while is always something to anticipate. neylux provides an amazing work-life balance and I am grateful to be able to do that without disrupting any of the two.

How does working remotely looks like for you?
It doesn’t really affect me in any other way than working from home in Germany. The time difference is minimal (only one hour ahead), which makes the communication with my colleagues and our customers really easy and comfortable. Working in a Mediterannean environment as in Crete, is also very helpful, as you recharge your batteries as much as being on vacation and I put more energy and passion into my work.

So you know Crete by heart – can you share your favorite places on the island you visited this summer?
Crete is an amazing place. It is the biggest island in Greece and one of the biggest in the Mediterannean Sea. It is located in the south and is actually the southernmost part of Europe (Gavdos island).

There are countless places to visit, that is why my advice to any visitor is always rent a car. The island is big and its beauties are mostly isolated and unreachable by public transport.

While working from here and having taken a week vacation to enjoy the more remote beaches, I visited many places:

The city of Heraklion is the capital of the island and where I actually come from and live. It is a nice city, full of Venetian and medieval architecture.

The ancient city of Knossos, home of the minoan civilization, the first big civilization of Europe, is only some minutes away.

The arguably most beautiful city of the island, Chania, in the west, with its picturesque port and amazing architecture. A night in Chania is something to remember.

The island is full of beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters. The best ones lie on the south, since the water is colder and has a distinct green color. While many are on any guide you can find online, the ones on the south of Heraklion are not so well known and thus more quiet and not full of tourists.

If someone wants to visit some of the northern beaches, I would recommend the ones in Bali, near Rethymnon, as the waters are amazing.

All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support that I’ve received from neylux. The culture that we have built over the years is outstanding and it reflects on our professional, high quality work and our customers’ satisfaction.

Do you have any tips (or learnings) you can share about working remotely?
Try to create a nice and inspiring environment for you to work efficiently. It has to be cozy, but not relaxing and give you all the energy you need to be productive.

As far as everyone is dreaming to be able to work from the beach, it is not realistically possible. A nice, quiet cafe would be a nice solution, but nothing beats a personal space created at home specifically for work.

Our brain has to be wired this way, so when we enter that space we get serious and get to work.

Are there also any negative aspects for you?
Lack of personal contact – Talking with the colleagues face to face and getting to have small talk directly boosts the team spirit and helps creating a better work understanding between us.

Sometimes this is lost with remote working, that is why it is necessary to visit the office and get to meet the colleagues personally in a regular basis.
